"LMS Selection Toolkit"

Don't buy an LMS without taking these steps first.

The decision to switch from one LMS to another or to implement a LMS for the first time isn’t one to be taken lightly.  The organization is going to make a significant investment of people’s time and money.  Your job is to make the case that the organization will be better off with the new solution than it is currently.  Senior management will be looking for answers to questions about the future state such as:

  • What resources and support are needed to implement the solution?
  • What governance, processes and roles are required for ongoing support?
  • What benefits and efficiencies will our company gain?

Of course, technology and features will be an important part of the decision-making process, but the latest and greatest technology alone won’t bring about sustainable change for the organization.  Your LMS selection needs to be grounded in the needs of the organization. We advocate you take a stakeholder-centered approach to answer these questions.

We identify three key groups of stakeholders to drive your LMS selection:

  1. Business Leaders:  The reason we invest in learning is to engage, empower and elevate people.  What this means will vary across the business, so we need to engage with key function leaders - the people whose strategy the LMS should enable.
  2. Instructional Designers and Instructors:  These are the “super users” of the system and making sure their needs are met will often be the most critical determinant of success or failure of your LMS.
  3. End Users:  In the context of expectations that are more and more informed by the apps we use in our personal lives, we need to understand our end users - -why they’re coming to the LMS, what they need to do  – to create user experiences that keep them coming back

In this LMS Selection Toolkit, you'll find practical tools and guidance how to engage each of these stakeholder groups to elicit the inputs you need to make the right LMS choice for your organization.
